Garima Kalra, Co-Founder of Mi Arcus, speaks about collaborative parenting and the sharing of responsibilities with her husband.
"Most of our common notions and beliefs are formed by what we observe in the world around us. This was certainly the case for me; as a child, I saw my father working and knew it was his earnings that kept the family going. He was the one who, in my young mind, was a big support and the primary provider of financial security. This was likely true for most fathers in those days. But change is always welcome, and this was the case for me when my husband decided to switch roles and become a hands-on dad to our little baby. With the arrival of Bishan, our first baby, I noticed a big change in my spouse; he had become incredibly emotional as if it was instinct and the day he took charge and began caring for our son, he did so in a poised and loving way -- mimicking the care that a mother is known to provide. It was then that my notion of what “daddies” were meant for changed, as now here was my infant son’s father, stepping in to give all he could sharing equal responsibility for raising our child. The new generation of millennial parents understand the importance of “shared responsibility” and unlike my father’s generation, the roles of parenting are far more dual than ever before. Men can and are happily involved in raising their children instead of just being the breadwinners. So, if women can have it all, why can't men?"
